BRIEF HISTORY OF KARTING Karting started in the US in the 1950's and is wildly popular in Europe and many other countries worldwide. Art Ingels is generally accepted to be the father of karting. A veteran hot rodder and a race car builder at Kurtis Kraft, he built the first kart in Southern California in 1956. Kurtis Kraft was a famous builder of Indy race cars during the 1950s. Ingels assembled the first go kart out of scrap metal and a surplus West Bend Company two-stroke cycle engine. He tested it in the Rose Bowl parking lot. Go karts would be the most common name used in the past, but as the sport continued to evolve the name has been replaced with simply the word KART. Kart racing is really the first step in the ladder within motorsports. |
